As a dog owner, it's important to be prepared for anything. That's why knowing basic Canine Health and First Aid is so vital. Knowing basic canine first aid can be a life saver for dogs, just as it is for humans. As a responsible pet owner, it is important to understand general health problems that dogs experience and how to address them in an emergency situation before professional help arrives.

A great way to start is to take a class on canine first aid so you can be well versed in the essential treatments and protocols that may not only save your furry pal's life one day but help cope with everyday accidents.

You will pick up vital tips there you will put to use before you know it. I learnt that Cornflour can be used to stem bleeding for instance which would have been really handy when Skye torn her dew claw off. She caught it when making minimal effort to jump over a branch. (Standard Skye behaviour!) The sounds she made was horrendous and it bled really heavily – you can’t help but panic. But its not an emergency as far as the Vets are concerned – luckily the bleeding stopped after a little while but how helpful would it have been to know this little gem!

Knowing your dogs general health and recognise when they are behaving out of character. Be aware of what is “normal” for your dog – such as what there resting heart rate. Learn how to take your dogs pulse and temperature.

Know when a upset tummy needs veterinary attention and be aware of the signs of Dehydration and Shock.  

Familiarizing yourself with symptoms of common canine illnesses and ailments

Know how to bandage a cut paw and prevent infection.

Do you have a Pet first aid kit? We do now! I don’t always carry it with me on walks but it is in my car. The easy-access supplies gives added assurance that we are prepared for any many accidents or injury. This can be a simple as saline to wash something from an eye or paw, a tick remover or a compression bandage

Taking some time to research dog health issues, seek training courses specifically designed for pet owners and stocking your pet supplies kit appropriately can make all the difference when a Dog needs it most, but also provide peace of mind for owners during worrying times of illness.

You can even pick up dog first aid books or attend classes in your area for more interactive learning.
